Infomation to visiting radio amateurs

Norway is a signatory to CEPT T/R 61-01.

As long as you have a level of licence that is listed as CEPT licence in T/R 61-01 then you are allowed to operate from Norway with the following conditions:

  • Use the callsign LA/mycallsign in Norway, and JW/mycallsign at Svalbard. Any other prefixes is a breach of licence.
  • Your stay is on a tourist visa or less than 3 months.
  • Transmissions shall be in accordance with IARU Region 1 band plans.
  • Transmitting is not allowed from any balloon, drone, airplane or similar without a person onboard.
  • If your transmitting is causing interference, the output power shall be reduced to 100W.
  • You cannot send commercial, paid for or encrypted messages.
  • Bring your national issued licence document and a passport or an EU national ID card. Observe that other forms of ID are not considered valid.

CEPT Novice license is currently not implemented in Norway and cannot be used.

Observe that there are limitations on operations if you are closer than 20 km from Ny-Ålesund on Svalbard.

Observe that Norway has power limitations on 160m, this is found in the table in §7.

Tillatt maksimal utgangseffekt fra sender (watt) = maximum transmitter output power

Tillatt maksimal båndbredde = Allowed max transmitted bandwith

1000 W tillates brukt til EME og MS forutsatt bruk av retningsantenne og logging av tid, asimut og elevasjon ved sending. = 100W is allowed for use on EME and Meteor Scatter provided you use a gain / yagi antenna and log time, Az and El when transmitting.

If you are staying outside the limits in T/R 61/01, Norway is also a signatory to T/R 61-02. In these cases you are welcome to contact us in order to determine if your local licence gives a reciprocal licence in Norway.
